South Sudan's protected area of Bandingilo National Park hosts the second-largest wildlife migration in the world. The Boma National Park is an important refuge for African buffalo, elephant, leopard, giraffe, zebra, oryx and cheetah. The Sudd is a vast swamp in South Sudan, formed by the White Nile. The area which the swamp covers is one of the world's largest wetlands and the largest freshwater wetland in the Nile basin. In the north of Sudan there is the very dry Nubian Desert. The dry regions are plagued by sandstorms, known as haboob, which can completely block out the sun. A referendum took place in Southern Sudan from 9 to 15 January 2011 on whether the region should remain a part of Sudan or be independent.
